Jewelry can be marketed and sold very successfully through consignment.  A lot of shops, galleries, and other retailers are always looking for new additions to their collections and are very open to interesting business opportunities.

Consignment means you lend your jewelry to certain businesses for them to display the pieces in their establishments and sell them to their clientele.  You agree on a price with the seller and he or she will pay you once the pieces are sold, in this way, they pay only for what they sell and avoid filling their inventories with items that may not rotate.

In many ways, it is easier and more profitable to sell your jewelry pieces through different types of retailers than to do it through shows and home jewelry parties.

Your jewelry business can become a very strong income source if you have good marketing and record-keeping strategies to face the consignment world.

Your products, your attitude, and the way in which you manage your business, will determine whether you are successful, or not, selling on consignment.

The most important thing is that you understand the needs of your clients, in this case, the shops, the galleries, and other retailers, and that you clearly grasp how these work.

The shops are always on the look out for new and unique items to enhance their product offer, to grant higher status to the place, and to stand out amid a sea of similar businesses.

Shop and gallery owners want special pieces that move fast in their inventories at a good price, and they are eager to find good, dependable and professional suppliers to do business with.

As everyone else in business, they are very attentive to their bottom line, and to how your jewelry pieces can help them cover their costs and make them profit.

Remember that when you sell your jewelry through consignment it has to sell twice, one to the shop owner who is showing your pieces at his or her store, and another one to the final customer who buys it from the shop for personal use; thus, you should think of a good price to offer the shop owner so that he or she finds it profitable to carry your jewelry, and you can also suggest a retail price for the final customer to help the seller get some perspective. When you buy wholesale jewelry, you should keep prices in mind.

In any case, consignment is an option that greatly favors both parts if everyone collaborates.  You can increase your profits exponentially by presenting your jewelry pieces to different markets you would not have been able to reach otherwise, and the sellers can boost their image and sales by presenting unique products that enchant their clientele.

It happens to everyone and it may happen to you. Maybe you are having a hard time getting started in your jewelry business probably because of fear, worries, or concerns that hold you back.

If you feel somehow stuck and unable to envision your jewelry business’s future, a vision board can help you see your goals right in front of you.

A vision board offers great self-motivation, and can truly inspire you to challenge your fears and all of the “crazy” thoughts that may cloud your mind.

But, what exactly is a vision board?

It is a bunch of pictures, quotes, words, and symbols arranged in a collage set-up and that mean something to you.

A vision board can have any shape and size, and it can be elaborate or simple, but plan it to be flexible, so that you are able to adjust and change its content according to how your visions, dreams, and hopes progress.  There are endless options to make your vision board something special and inspiring, just let your imagination fly!

In a vision board, you can put pictures of your family, of a vacation you dream of, a new car you would like to own, the house of your dreams, your perfect partner, the type of jewelry you would like to sell, or anything else that makes your heart soar and that you want to see become a reality in your life.

The pictures and words you put up can be taken from magazines, brochures, letters, or handmade.  Try to use pictures from a time in your life when you felt great, alive, and successful.

With a good vision board, you will have your dreams and goals displayed in front of you everyday.  Pin everything up in a way that inspires you, so that you get a boost every time you look at it during the day.

It is a way of symbolizing everything that you are working for; it will move you closer to your goals and dreams by motivating you to take one step forward at a time.

To get you started, get some magazines and clip the images that inspire you and have meaning to you.  You will start getting ideas; you will be reminded of what you aspire to in your life, and it will make dreaming a lot more fun.

Soon enough, you’ll stop dreaming and start contacting jewelry wholesalers for that first batch of jewelry to sell!

Business cards can be a very effective marketing tool for your jewelry business.  It is all about making them interesting, high quality, and unforgettable, about always having them with you, and offering one with every sale you make.

Here we give you 4 tips to make your business cards work wonders for your jewelry business:

1.    Put a photo on your business card
Every jewelry business card must include a photo of one of your pieces because, whenever a client sees your card, he or she will remember what type of jewelry you sell.  If they don’t have such a reference, they will probably throw the card away at some point.

A good photo will make them remember what you sell and how much they liked it.  Jewelry is a visual product, thus, a business card without a photo is not an effective marketing tool.

The job of a business card in your jewelry packaging is to be a mini-ad for your business. If you want to use a quality, professional photo, and you’re no photographer, ask your jewelry wholesaler to provide some.

2.    Share jewelry care tips on the back of the card
Offering your clients added value should always be a priority, even on your business cards.

Use the back of your cards to share quick care tips with your clients, maybe teach them how to protect their jewelry from scratching, from chemicals, or from extreme temperatures; teach them how to clean their pieces, or how to store them to protect them and prevent tarnish.

3.    Get high quality cards at a good price
To get the best price and highest quality, you should design your own business cards and have them printed professionally by an online business card printing service.

Some services offer you a very simple and creative platform to create your card and place the order. Check this one out, for example: www.moo.com.  There are hundreds of others. They are very competitive and often offer special deals; so, you have the opportunity to get amazing business cards for a very good price.

A high quality business card will say a lot about your jewelry business.

4.    Don’t leave anything out
Every jewelry business card should have the following information:

-Business name

-Your name

-Phone number

-Website address

-Email address

-A short statement or a quote about your jewelry

-P.O. Box

-Photo of a jewelry piece

Make sure you arrange the information in a way that is easy to read, pleasant to the eye, and that supports your jewelry business’s style.

If there is too much information and the card feels cluttered, use the back of the card to share some of it.  Remember to give preference to the photo, make it the center of attention, and fit the rest of the information around it.

Most importantly, have fun creating your business cards!

Keeping the wholesale jewelry pieces you buy sparkling makes them more valuable in the eyes of your customers.  Everything from fingerprints, to skin oils, dust, and tarnish, blur the beauty of jewelry and keep it from shinning with a high quality appearance.

If you want to increase your sales and charge high prices, keep your jewelry clean.  The sparkles that clean jewelry produce are the reason why it is sold so successfully, so you, as a jewelry home business owner, must work to keep your pieces clean and free of tarnish.

You can even give added value to your customers by offering to clean their other jewelry pieces. This will help you create a good relationship with them because they will feel nurtured and you will establish yourself as an expert in the field.

Nevertheless, you have to be very careful when cleaning jewelry.  First, you must make sure the piece is in good condition, no lose stones or weak parts, and never use abrasives or bleach, which will damage the silver and the stones.  Discard toothpaste, scouring powder, baking soda, and creamy opaque jewelry cleaners.

When using a toothbrush, use a new one, and use it only to clean jewelry.

If you are thinking about seriously offering the jewelry cleaning service to your customers, you may want to be safe and make your own jewelry cleaner.

Here we give you a recipe that has worked wonders; you can use it for your business and even give it to your customers as an added value gift. Just print the recipe on a small card and include it in the shopping bag with every purchase:

Mix together:

-2 tablespoons of liquid hand soap

-1 cup of water

-½ a teaspoon of ammonia

Add a drop of food coloring if you want to make it look like a brand cleaner.  Store it in a clean glass jar, where it can last a year or more.  This cleaner can be used on gold, silver, and costume jewelry, but not on opal or other porous stones.

How to apply it:

-Soak the jewelry piece in the cleaner for a moment and rinse it with water.

-Pat dry it with a soft cloth.

Just as it was for Melody Stuart.

Melody buys wholesale jewelry and sells it for a nifty profit. Although she had tried selling her pieces in every way imaginable, she had never considered a trunk show.

One day in January, she set out to visit stores that may accept her jewelry on consignment.  She gathered her best pieces, and in the company of her best friend Alyssa and her daughter Mary, began parading around town presenting her jewelry to all kinds of storeowners.  As the day advanced, she grew less optimistic; each store she visited was like enduring a job interview.

Towards the end of the day, when her energy was almost gone and she was feeling pretty down, they arrived to a secondhand clothing consignment store.  She immediately knew shoppers went there looking for a deal, so she understood this place was not the best option for her jewelry pieces.

As she decided to move to the next store, Alyssa insisted she shouldn’t let any chance go by, so she walked up to the counter and asked to speak to the owner.

A very enthusiastic mother and daughter, who fell in love with the jewelry at first sight, owned the store; however, they didn’t think it would sell in their shop at the prices Melody was asking for.

Melody thanked them and was about to leave when the daughter asked, “What are you doing Saturday?”  The store was having a Customer Appreciation Day with food, massages, makeovers, and a lot more, and they invited Melody to set up a table in front of the store to see what happened.  In this way, the women agreed to a trunk show.

Saturday came and it was a mutual success.  Melody sold jewelry pieces to some of their regular customers, and the beautiful table setting she designed attracted new customers to the store.

Every time she sold a piece, the customer had to go inside the store to pay, and Melody, and the storeowners, noticed many of them came out with purchased clothes too.

Melody took the opportunity to add new names to her mailing list, and she gave tons of business cards away.  Also, the store kept a commission of only 10% of her sales, which is very rare.

She was invited back with her trunk show during a popular street fair, and it worked even better.  Melody had lots of exposure and didn’t have to pay for a booth, so she made three times more than on her last trunk show, and the storeowners took their 10% commission in jewelry pieces.  Melody is now invited regularly to do trunk shows with them, and the earnings keep growing.

So, stay open to the opportunities out there.  As a business owner, you must think outside-the-jewelry-box.

Your jewelry business could benefit greatly from a catalog.  It doesn’t have to be very elaborate, and by displaying your jewelry pieces in a catalog, you can get more sales than by just trying to explain what type of jewelry you sell.

You can give catalogs to your friends and family for them to show around, and you should always carry one with you just in case your jewelry business comes up in a conversation.

Additionally, if you throw jewelry parties, a catalog can help you sell more.  After the party, you can give your hostess two or three catalogs for her to show to the people that couldn’t attend, prompting additional sales.  You can ask for the catalogs back, to save on costs and to protect your ideas.

And, how do you make a catalog for your jewelry?

-Well, all you need is a digital camera, a good quality printer, and software that can print catalogs.  You can use Photoshop or any other photo-editing program to crop and edit your photos.

-Avoid taking close-ups that may appear blurry, prefer wider shots that show the pieces clearly and in detail.  Place each piece over a white surface or background because the flash from the camera will brighten up the picture and emphasize the jewelry when it hits the color white.

-Limit the use of props in the photos, because although they are very creative and enhance the image, a catalog has a lot of content, and the props may clutter the jewelry in the photos.

-After you have taken the photos, download them to your computer, and edit and crop them one by one to perfect the images.  Save your photos and move to the catalog.

-Get the catalog template, type all the information you want to share in it, for example, your contact information and the benefits of being hostess of a home jewelry party, transfer the photos, and organize them by collection, by color, by type of material, by category, or any other way that suits your and your customers’ needs best.

-Assign a catalog number to each jewelry piece and put it next to the photo along with a description and the price; this makes it easier for the customers to order.

-For each catalog number, create a file card that records that specific piece.  In this card, specify the piece’s cost, materials, any specifics, and the final price.

Once you have designed your catalog, print it in good quality paper.  Although it may not look like one of those big company shiny catalogs, if the photos were well taken and the colors are kept simple, your catalog will look very nice and original.

It will demand time and effort on your part to make your wholesale jewelry catalog, but it is worth it.  You will boost your sales and will look more professional.

Are you for or against using live models to photograph the jewelry pieces that you sell?

Here are the pros and cons in regards to using live models:

The benefits
-A live model helps a lot in showing how the jewelry looks on a woman.  The client can see the length, the size, and the fit of each piece.

-On a live model, you can really see how the pieces work together as a set; you can’t do this without someone wearing them.

-The jewelry can be enhanced and complemented by the model’s wardrobe, making it even more appealing to the customer.

-It is a nice touch to offer pictures of the pieces both alone and modeled by a person.

The disadvantages
-If your customer does not look like the model, she may find it difficult to relate to the jewelry being worn by one, and this may work against you and your business.

-Close-up photos, besides showing the piece’s details, also show the marks and other imperfections on the skin, distracting the customer from the beauty of the jewelry.

-Some people will never think of wearing a jewelry piece that has been worn, no matter how briefly, by another person.  Since your stock is most probably limited, this may happen in your case.

-There is the risk of spreading skin infections and disease through ear wires and other pierced jewelry.  Thoroughly clean every piece after the model has worn them.

Most jewelry photos on renowned websites, catalogs and ads do not show live models wearing the pieces.  The occasional photos that use a model have these characteristics:

-If it is a close-up, the skin looks perfect, obviously retouched and edited with a computer program.

-Most photos are full-body shots that show the model having a fun or romantic experience while wearing the pieces.  They are selling a feeling, a lifestyle, and not so much the jewelry piece itself.

-In some cases, there is a beautiful model in the photo but she is not wearing the jewelry, she is just located next to it to imply that she likes and wears that piece or line.

However, since most of the big names in jewelry do not use models wearing their pieces on the photos, this means they sell more when the pieces are presented in other ways, so you should do the same when photographing your wholesale jewelry pieces.

Read this article to find out what jewelry and accessories are the hot trends for the Fall of 2010 and what you should be buying from your jewelry wholesaler.

Bold statements and mixed media
Put your eye on big and bold pieces of jewelry.  These could be chunky, oversized, or opulent, but most definitely, this season, size matters.  This trend looks great when centered on mixed media, this is, the mixture of different materials when creating the big pieces.

Strong motifs
This season, encourage strong images like snakes, elephants, flowers, birds, and coins.  Strong motifs add a unique mood to a jewelry collection; so, find one that will appeal to your clients.  Look for pieces that highlight a motif by using it in different ways.

Metals
Plating finishes offer the right mood message.  Shiny surfaces convey a more traditional feeling, and burnish platings offer an antique and nostalgic mood.  Find pieces that mix these to offer your clients a really modern and adaptable look.

Fringe fun
Fringed necklaces, in chains, beads, and mixed media are hot today and will be hot in the Fall and Winter of 2010.

Earrings
The larger, the better.  If you want to go modern, go big, and then go bigger, and bigger… however, you will always find someone looking for small and medium sized earrings.  Large earrings in 2010 are lightweight and colorful.  Look for murano glass beaded jewelry, which offers a delightful finish and sells very well.

Colors
The colors of the season are deep greens and rich purples set in antique worn gold or gunmetal gray platings.  These colors can be accented with teal and fuchsia.

Jewelry sets
Look for trios of looks; every necklace should have a pair of earrings and a bracelet to match it.  Most women like to match their jewelry, and helping them complete their look will make their shopping experience much more enjoyable and efficient, and you will sell much more!

The wholesale jewelry business has set up a distinctive relationship between the seller and the buyer: it makes jewelry available to everyone, because it is very affordable.

This type of jewelry is created with molds.  A design is created and approved, and then a mold is made and used to create several copies of the same piece.  It is very popular because it can be sold in many ways, even on the Internet.

Wholesale jewelry is produced in bulk; thus, the artist’s designs can reach more people.  There is a lot of potential for creating attractive pieces through the use of many different materials.

Many people are not aware of the talent that is needed to create a wholesale jewelry design. Actually, the first edition of a piece that an artist does is very expensive and very valuable.  The following editions use the same mold and thus, are less expensive.

The way in which a piece is crafted may differ from good to bad, and the market price point affects this.  For example, wholesale 925 jewelry is created through an automated process; however, it can be hand-finished to better its quality.  This is not done though, as it makes the piece more expensive.  In the same way, jewelry made with gemstones like aquamarine, tourmaline, ruby and sapphire, is very pricey and its market is restricted.

Today, it is very common to see duplicates of pieces designed by famous artists or celebrities.  In a way, wholesale jewelry has made some fantasies possible, by offering an affordable option of a special symbol.

Many jewelry wholesalers offer their pieces at very good prices on the web; nevertheless, you have to understand that it is different to buy from online jewelry stores than it is to buy from online wholesalers:

-Online jewelry stores sell their pieces at retail prices even though the price may be a little reduced, thus, you must be careful.

-In regards to a jewelry wholesaler, you have to ensure you are dealing with a serious company and are getting a good product.  Even if they announce that their pieces are ‘authentic’, you must make sure.

-Be careful if they use the words ‘gold plated’ or ‘realistic’, because this means the jewelry is not gold and that the stones are not real.

-Remember also that some wholesalers only sell in bulk, so you have to be willing to buy at least the minimum amount they require.

You can also buy wholesale jewelry in trade shows, by joining a discount club, or in person, from companies in your city.

In any case, getting into the wholesale jewelry business is a good and profitable idea; it has made many women’s dream of becoming independent, a reality.

Are you excited about the idea of starting a jewelry business?  How great!  Indeed, there is no better way of setting about any new business; nevertheless, remember that it requires a lot of work.  Of one thing you can be certain: a jewelry business is a really good way of making money due to the importance jewelry has in today’s society.

In order to begin your jewelry business venture with the right foot, you must learn the basics about starting it, in this way; you can make sure your efforts are accurately directed towards achieving success.

After reading this article, you can set out to plan your business with a solid base, so that you can concentrate on working hard to offer your time, customer service skills, and strength of mind to the core of your business and to your future clients.

1.    Get a tax ID number
In order to buy wholesale jewelry, companies will ask you for this number to make sure you are legitimate.

2.    Define your target market
Will you be selling jewelry for kids, women, men, teenagers, or mature people?  You must have clarity about who your market is in order to know how to effectively reach them.  Try to specify the characteristics of your target market as thoroughly as possible; the more you know about them, the easier it will be for you to find direct ways to get to them and the most accurately you will be able to fulfill their needs and desires.

3.    Define an advertising plan
Once you know who you are selling to, think about how you will advertise your jewelry pieces and how much money you can allocate to this.  You could advertise in magazines or go for more direct ways like, direct mail, flyers, word of mouth, or shows, to name a few; it all depends on who you want to reach.

4.    Select the right jewelry wholesaler for your market
Do extensive research to compare wholesale jewelry distributors, browse the Internet and get recommendations from people in the business, friends and family.

5.    Create a website
It can be a simple one, but the idea is to open up your business to as many people as possible.  Millions of people look for all kinds of products on the Internet, and a good portion of those will certainly look for yours.

6.    Start a blog
Also related to the Internet, a blog is an amazing way to attract customers and add value to your jewelry pieces.  You will appear as a concerned jewelry seller if you provide valuable information related to everything about jewelry: trends, care, news, advice on how to wear it, best gifts for occasions, promotions, etc.  Customers will become loyal to you because you are helping them, not only selling.

7.    Create a newsletter and join a mailing list provider
And still related to the Web, this is the best way to get a client database.  The newsletter can be sent to subscribers in a daily, weekly, or monthly basis, and it must be filled with priceless information: tips, news, promotions, specials, freebies, and bestsellers.  Visitors to your website have to signup to receive the newsletter, ensuring you have their contact information for future business ideas and opportunities.

8.    Join eBay
Through this website you can grab a very special market of bidders.

9.    Take a walk around town
Visit local shops in town that complement your jewelry pieces and offer them to the managers.  Take brochures and business cards, and be open to deals they could offer you.  If you can arrange a joint venture, you are sure to discover all the potential a jewelry business can offer, but remember that this requires you to work in favor of your partner as much as you work for your own business.  For joint ventures to be profitable and successful you have to give in order to receive, you must really care about the other’s business and wish for their full success
