Jewelry selling is one of the oldest sales-related professions in the world. Men have made, traded, or sold jewelry since time immemorial, and women have always been seduced by these sparkling metal pieces.

One way of entering into the jewelry business nowadays is to buy from a jewelry wholesaler at a convenient price and to resell the pieces within your local neighborhood. It is an easy way to make a living, selling beautiful pieces of jewelry from the comfort of your house or even from everywhere you happen to be.

Technology helps us now to achieve this selling on the Internet, via blogs, ebay, or flickr. You can display your products, posting flattering photos of each jewelry piece. Moreover, you can send your regular customers monthly newsletters with news about sales, special offers or discounts if your clients buy in bulk, for example. However, you must be consistent in checking your e-mail or social media account often, so as to answer any questions or send the requested pieces right away.

You must constantly stay in touch with your customers by phone, mail or chat. And another very important thing to take into account is that you must know where the nearest post office is, at what time it’s open, and if it has a night service (one of those postboxes open 24 hours where you can post your packet yourself), but you must also become familiarized with the weights and rates, because the package will be returned to you if it is heavier than the price of the stamp you paid. And you certainly don’t want your customers to suffer delays just because you didn’t take the time to learn this information, right?

Anyway, selling jewelry is a very flexible job, because you work the hours you need and whenever you want. You can be your own boss, and even a good one! The trick is to have a trustworthy jewelry wholesaler, as well as a wide variety of pieces and in large quantities, so as to have enough on stock for your clients. Your jewelry wholesaler has to be reliable, responsible, and they have to offer you quality and fashionable pieces, not to mention good prices!

If the pieces are trendy and fashionable, and you have a good business relationship with your clients, they will buy from you season after season. You have to seduce your clients with an outstanding service and the best of designs. If they are satisfied, they will certainly come back and buy your products over and over again.

Someone once said that diamonds are a girl’s best friends, but he was mistaken. Every piece of jewelry can be a girl’s best friend; it is up to you to become an expert and give every client that piece of jewelry that was made for her, or even him! Remember the two tricks to being a successful jewelry seller: take care of your clients and have a good jewelry wholesaler.

Just as it was for Melody Stuart.

Melody buys wholesale jewelry and sells it for a nifty profit. Although she had tried selling her pieces in every way imaginable, she had never considered a trunk show.

One day in January, she set out to visit stores that may accept her jewelry on consignment.  She gathered her best pieces, and in the company of her best friend Alyssa and her daughter Mary, began parading around town presenting her jewelry to all kinds of storeowners.  As the day advanced, she grew less optimistic; each store she visited was like enduring a job interview.

Towards the end of the day, when her energy was almost gone and she was feeling pretty down, they arrived to a secondhand clothing consignment store.  She immediately knew shoppers went there looking for a deal, so she understood this place was not the best option for her jewelry pieces.

As she decided to move to the next store, Alyssa insisted she shouldn’t let any chance go by, so she walked up to the counter and asked to speak to the owner.

A very enthusiastic mother and daughter, who fell in love with the jewelry at first sight, owned the store; however, they didn’t think it would sell in their shop at the prices Melody was asking for.

Melody thanked them and was about to leave when the daughter asked, “What are you doing Saturday?”  The store was having a Customer Appreciation Day with food, massages, makeovers, and a lot more, and they invited Melody to set up a table in front of the store to see what happened.  In this way, the women agreed to a trunk show.

Saturday came and it was a mutual success.  Melody sold jewelry pieces to some of their regular customers, and the beautiful table setting she designed attracted new customers to the store.

Every time she sold a piece, the customer had to go inside the store to pay, and Melody, and the storeowners, noticed many of them came out with purchased clothes too.

Melody took the opportunity to add new names to her mailing list, and she gave tons of business cards away.  Also, the store kept a commission of only 10% of her sales, which is very rare.

She was invited back with her trunk show during a popular street fair, and it worked even better.  Melody had lots of exposure and didn’t have to pay for a booth, so she made three times more than on her last trunk show, and the storeowners took their 10% commission in jewelry pieces.  Melody is now invited regularly to do trunk shows with them, and the earnings keep growing.

So, stay open to the opportunities out there.  As a business owner, you must think outside-the-jewelry-box.

This is the way your next sale could start.

As it turns out, a blog is an excellent tool to sell jewelry online.  You can grab your readers’ interest in your pieces by blogging about how they were created, about interesting data regarding the materials used, about what’s unique in a specific jewelry piece, or about what it meant to one of your clients and personal stories they share with you.

The idea is to give your wholesale jewelry pieces a history and a meaning amid the ocean of options out there.  In a few blog posts, you can create an interesting story that adds value to your pieces and sets them apart.

Stories sell, they most definitely sell jewelry, and if they are told in episodes, each episode will bring more readers in.

Through a blog, you can build expectation around a new jewelry piece or collection you’ll be launching, you can make your readers desire your new pieces, and then disclose them.  Make a big deal out of the occasion and encourage your readers to comment.

Put an unobtrusive “buy now” button below the jewelry photo in your blog.  The majority of blog readers, besides wanting information, want to be entertained, and the more and better you do that, the more often they will return, the more they will recommend you to others, and eventually they will buy.

Think of it this way: you gather a crowd by telling interesting and amusing stories about the jewelry pieces you sell.  Once a story is told, you have an interested group ready to buy, and the rest will tell their friends and family about this amusing jewelry seller.

People pay for what they love, no matter the price; thus, your mission is to make your readers fall in love with your jewelry pieces so that they feel the need to buy them before someone else does.

Once in a while, offer your readers funny stories and episodes about things you and they care about. Make it a personal conversation, pour your words, heart, and soul into it.  Maybe comment on something you saw on TV, another blog entry, or a newsletter.  Make your readers laugh, cry, and feel deeply.

Emotions are powerful; if you can make your readers feel, they will come back for more, they will share it, and they will want to be an active part of it.

There are many small and big jewelry businesses around.  In order to excel over the rest, you have to permanently be on the lookout for ways to increase your profits and beat the competition; however, the basics are essential, and getting the best jewelry wholesaler out there will put you ahead of the game from the start.

In order to find the best of the best in wholesale jewelry, pay attention to the following characteristics in each of the wholesalers you are considering:

1.    They have international sources
The best jewelry wholesalers purchase pieces and materials from various sources and countries, allowing you to have more options on collections, and access to the newest trends.  This characteristic can also save you from economic crises given the varied suppliers you will have access to.

2.    They must know about the latest trends and know what the market is looking for
In order to help you sell, good jewelry wholesalers will offer you what’s in at the moment and also what is considered a classic, for example, sterling silver, Swarovski crystal, semi-precious stones, and cubic zirconia, which always sell and will certainly make your business thrive.

3.    They should offer a great variety of jewelry pieces
You have to be able to choose from a wide array of earrings, necklaces, beads, bracelets, rings, chains, and others.  The best of the best will also offer other lines of products, like hair accessories, belts, cell phone chains, key chains, and bag accessories that are great sellers and very attractive options for jewelry customers.

4.    The trademark of a good jewelry wholesaler is that they walk the walk and talk the talk
In other words, they deliver, and their first priority is customer satisfaction.  Jewelry wholesalers should be open to your recommendations and your clients’, and they should be able to meet special requests from your customers, so that you can provide a unique service.  If you have the chance, ask for recommendations from people you know in the business, or look for testimonials on the Internet and from other reliable sources.

The only way to sell big is by having the appropriate supply, support, and variety to get the most out of the jewelry market.  If your jewelry wholesaler can provide this support, you know that you are in business with the right professionals, and you can be certain that your jewelry business will provide you with years and years of financial stability and personal pride.

Starting a home business is always a great idea, especially if your budget is tight.  Depending on the kind of business you want to start, you have to think about the basics that will make the difference for your idea to be a success.

In a jewelry home business, it is vital that you present your pieces in an attractive and creative way so that they “speak” to the customer; appearance is everything, and thus, thinking about how to photograph them in an interesting way can take your business far ahead.

It is actually a good thing when budgets are tight.  It provides a great opportunity to be creative and unique, while learning to take the best advantage of your resources.

This is what Andrea did; she was a student with a dream.  She wanted to start her own jewelry business and didn’t let anything stop her.  Her budget was very limited, so she created a photo studio at home to make her jewelry look spectacular without hiring an expensive photographer.

She wanted her business to look professional, thus, the photos had to look professional.  In order to achieve this, she started researching and found lots of information online that explained what she should do and what to get to build a tabletop photo studio at home.

Andrea took the time to learn her camera settings and purchased a tripod, which she discovered is crucial for tabletop photography.  The rest required a very small investment, because she realized that the most important part was to create the right mood.

She got a 40-inch light tent and she invested in the appropriate lighting, buying some inexpensive table lamps, but expensive light bulbs of around 3000k.  With them, she achieved the soft light effect in the tent that brought out the best of her jewelry pieces.

She also found a black acrylic stand to display the jewelry on; this made the pieces stand out and gave them a classy look.  It also provided a nice reflection, making the photos look as if they were taken in a studio.  Finally, she got some velvet fabric to work as background for the photos.

Andrea says that her photo studio has helped her business succeed.  She says people often ask her who took the pictures, because they look like professional shots.

Of course, you can always ask your jewelry wholesalers for some quality material; however, if you want to imprint your own personality into your business, it is best to try doing things your way.

You can most certainly get new ideas from Andrea’s experience.  Just have clarity about what you want to achieve and you will surely find a creative way to get there.  Passion is the gateway to innovation; it is the secret to success.

As a jewelry business owner, you have a great opportunity to give added value to your customers by educating them.  There are many things you can teach them about jewelry: how to care for it, how to wear it, or the history behind a piece, stone or design. You can introduce them to a new material, or explain to them what the real value is of the pieces they are buying.  These are things that people will not normally know or consider important until someone else takes the time to teach it to them.  This is added value.

You can share your story with your customers and get them excited about owning a piece with a ‘history’, your ‘history’.  You can plan a different talk for every show or event where you present your jewelry, centering them on pieces or materials you wish to sell the most or show as special.  In the end, you will have several educative talks to share with your customers when the opportunity arises.

The key to educating your customers is knowledge.  You must know and understand your business deeply.  When you do, you feel comfortable, excited and safe talking about it.  Keep it simple and down to earth so that the message reaches your customers, if you use a lot of technical information or difficult vocabulary no one will grasp what you are trying to communicate.  The idea is to have fun doing what you do, and transmitting this enthusiasm to others through your knowledge.

Every time you show your jewelry, tell your customers something new about it, teach them something interesting, and explain why the pieces you offer are valuable, do not just say it.  You will be perceived not as your run-of-the-mill jewelry seller, but as an expert, a knowledgeable professional, and someone who cares to teach others about what they are buying.

An educated customer will trust you, will appreciate your product because he or she knows its worth, and will purchase from you over and over again.

Are you in the jewelry business part-time?  Would you fancy selling a couple of pieces of jewelry every day?  If your answer is yes, the secret is simple: wear your jewelry everywhere you go!

There are marketing opportunities virtually everywhere, and you will have the chance to profit from them if you are wearing some of your jewelry.  It doesn’t matter where you go, to the store, school, work, quilting class or the dentist, lots of people will see you, and if you want to boost your profits with your part-time jewelry business, make sure they always see you at your best, wearing nice clothes, your hair looking beautiful, a smile on your face, and at all times, wearing your best jewelry.  You can be sure many people will approach you to ask about it, and this is the perfect opportunity to market your business.

It is easy to sell a product once the potential customers are attracted towards it; it is just a matter of talking about its worth with enthusiasm.  You never know where your next sale can be:

- Maybe at work?  During work hours you come in contact with dozens or hundreds of people daily. There is a great chance someone will comment on the pieces you are wearing.  In meetings and office appointments you may find people who do not have the time to shop for gifts or need a custom design, and this is your chance to get them to buy from you.

- Maybe at school?  If you are studying, your classes are full of other students and teachers that could be interested in your jewelry.  Wear your pieces to club meetings, concerts, dinner parties, and other school activities.

- Maybe at the store?  Shopping with your jewelry on will attract the attention of other people at the store.

- Maybe in waiting rooms?  While waiting at the office for a doctor or dentist’s appointment, wear an incredible piece of jewelry.  You can even take a small display and make as if you’re arranging it, to prompt questions from other patients waiting.

- Maybe at church or community meetings?  These people know you and will be very open to ask and compliment you on your style.

- Maybe at family gatherings or in outings with friends?  There are no better people to pitch to than your family and friends to start selling big.  They will promote you among their friends and other family members, starting a powerful chain reaction full of possibilities.

Make sure to give your card to every person who asks about your jewelry.  If possible, include a small brochure or postcard, and make it easy for them to reach you at any time.

Many retailers today want to take their business out of the traditional store setting and sell jewelry in a variety of other venues.  For many, this means online selling, but it can also mean selling in markets, kiosks, or even traveling shows.  You still need a good wholesale jewelry supplier, but you no longer need the upkeep and overhead of a permanent location.  If this type of jewelry selling appeals to you, you will need to have a complete “jewelry –store- to- go” plan.  Here is a checklist of the things you should have to take on the road with you.

•    Some markets will allow for pulling your vehicle right up to the selling location, but if that’s not possible, you will need a wagon, garden cart or shopping trolley to transport your goods from your car to your display booth.

•    Folding table and chairs.  These are readily available at department and home stores.  Be sure to have at least two chairs in case you have someone helping you at the show.  A helper can not only provide company, but they can also man your booth to allow you to take a break or to talk one on one with customers without keeping others waiting.

•    Table covers.  Any kind of cloth will do, although it is a good idea to have something that can stand up to being outdoors.  Clips that can weigh the cloth down and keep it place are also helpful.

•    Order books, receipt books and gift certificates as well as marketing materials.  Have a sign that displays your company name and don’t forget your business cards!

•    Cash box, credit card slips, debit machine, or whatever payment equipment you need.  Cash float for making change with cash sales.

•    Extension cords, lamps, power bars and lighting accessories such as extra bulbs, and duct tape for keeping cords out of the way.  Good lighting is paramount to showing your merchandise at its best.

•    Display cases, stands, risers, and cloths for displaying your jewelry

•    A canopy or tent cover if your show is taking place outdoors.  Be sure to have some type of weights or stakes to help anchor the canopy in case of wind.

•    For yourself, a small cooler with refreshments, a raincoat, sunscreen, bug spray and even an extra sweater or jacket for weather changes. A radio can be pleasant for passing a long day and can even keep you up on impending bad weather.

While there may be many other things you’ll find you need as you go along, this list should provide a good starting point.  Selling wholesale jewelry out of the retailing mainstream can be fun and prosperous, but it is always going to work the best when you have the right tools and supplies at hand!

Color is a part of life. It is everywhere and we use it for everything and in everything, and it is especially important in clothes and accessories.  A well-planned outfit will show a combination, or even contrast, of well-chosen pieces and colors that strengthen an image and a personality.

Color combination between an outfit and its accessories is an art, one that you must master if you own or are planning to start a wholesale jewelry business venture, thus, here you will find a little about color theory applied to fashion and tips on how to get the best out of it.

Primary colors are red, blue and yellow; any other color results from the combination of these, as mixed in different amounts.  The secondary colors, purple, orange and green, are created from the combination of any two primary ones in the same amount.

Primary and secondary colors provide the complementary colors, which are the ones that are directly opposite to each other on the color wheel.  The complement for red is green, for yellow is purple, and for blue is orange.  Talk about contrast!  This is the definitely the way to go if you want to stand out.  Combine a yellow suit with purple jewelry to appear sophisticated and even playful, depending on the tones.

However, color is not only about appearing flashy, there are ways to use color and still be subtle.  On the color wheel, the two colors that are next to the main color’s complement form the triad colors, which guide the way for selecting the jewelry and accessories to match.

That same yellow suit when combined with silver, or blue, or even red will make the person look elegant and professional.  For the always-necessary gray business suit, for example, you first must establish if the gray is cool or warm.  It will look more red or yellow if it is warm, or bluer, if it is cool.  If it were cool, the complement of blue is orange, which triad is red and yellow.  Based on this, gold will go great with that suit.

As a general rule, follow these steps every time you want to complement an outfit with the perfect jewelry to make a statement:

-    Establish the base color of the clothes; it will be the main color.

-    Find the complement for that color using the color wheel.  To stand out, use that complement.

-    Take a look at the triad next to the complement; these are the colors you will most likely use to accessorize.  You can use both colors or just one, in its different tones.

If you follow these steps, any outfit will make the person stand out in the right way.

If you are looking for ways to increase your jewelry sales, gift certificates are a sure way to go.  Jewelry is a great gift for many occasions, but since it is a very personal one, a gift certificate will allow the person to choose a piece she really likes, and one that complements her personality.

A gift certificate is fairly simple to design, if you have a computer and a printer, you can do it yourself.  Simply choose an elegant template online and fill it out to fit your business, but you can let your imagination run wild and make them into an interesting and appealing thing.  It is great to use photos of your jewelry, ask your jewelry wholesalers for some great pictures or take them yourself, and never forget to put your business card inside the envelope.

Any gift certificate must contain your business name and contact information, a “To:” line and a “From:” line, an “Amount:” line, “Custom orders welcome” legend (in case the client wants to buy a special or customized piece by adding some extra money themselves), a unique certificate number, and a security sticker to ensure its authenticity (it should be accompanied by the legend: “This item has embedded security and is void if not present”.

For your personal records, it is important that you keep a log of the certificates you sell, in this way; you have a way to account for each one of them and to confirm the certificate is real and everything is correct (amount, dates, etc.).

You can allow the buyer to fill the “To:” and “From:” spaces in their own handwriting to make it more personal, but you should always write the dollar amount yourself.

Any gift certificate log must have, at least, the following information:  certificate’s number, purchaser’s name, recipient’s name, date sold, dollar amount, and date redeemed.

You will not sell any certificates if you do not let your customers know that you offer them.  Thus, wherever you show your pieces, always have a sign announcing that you have gift certificates available, and also tell everyone personally while they are looking at the jewelry.  In this way, you have the valuable opportunity of reminding them of the great advantages of buying a certificate for a loved one.

Once someone arrives to redeem the certificate, you will have the chance to sell her more than one piece, maybe something to combine with her chosen gift.

Gift certificates work by attracting clients as if by referral, this means, it can’t get any better!
