Are you excited about the idea of starting a jewelry business?  How great!  Indeed, there is no better way of setting about any new business; nevertheless, remember that it requires a lot of work.  Of one thing you can be certain: a jewelry business is a really good way of making money due to the importance jewelry has in today’s society.

In order to begin your jewelry business venture with the right foot, you must learn the basics about starting it, in this way; you can make sure your efforts are accurately directed towards achieving success.

After reading this article, you can set out to plan your business with a solid base, so that you can concentrate on working hard to offer your time, customer service skills, and strength of mind to the core of your business and to your future clients.

1.    Get a tax ID number
In order to buy wholesale jewelry, companies will ask you for this number to make sure you are legitimate.

2.    Define your target market
Will you be selling jewelry for kids, women, men, teenagers, or mature people?  You must have clarity about who your market is in order to know how to effectively reach them.  Try to specify the characteristics of your target market as thoroughly as possible; the more you know about them, the easier it will be for you to find direct ways to get to them and the most accurately you will be able to fulfill their needs and desires.

3.    Define an advertising plan
Once you know who you are selling to, think about how you will advertise your jewelry pieces and how much money you can allocate to this.  You could advertise in magazines or go for more direct ways like, direct mail, flyers, word of mouth, or shows, to name a few; it all depends on who you want to reach.

4.    Select the right jewelry wholesaler for your market
Do extensive research to compare wholesale jewelry distributors, browse the Internet and get recommendations from people in the business, friends and family.

5.    Create a website
It can be a simple one, but the idea is to open up your business to as many people as possible.  Millions of people look for all kinds of products on the Internet, and a good portion of those will certainly look for yours.

6.    Start a blog
Also related to the Internet, a blog is an amazing way to attract customers and add value to your jewelry pieces.  You will appear as a concerned jewelry seller if you provide valuable information related to everything about jewelry: trends, care, news, advice on how to wear it, best gifts for occasions, promotions, etc.  Customers will become loyal to you because you are helping them, not only selling.

7.    Create a newsletter and join a mailing list provider
And still related to the Web, this is the best way to get a client database.  The newsletter can be sent to subscribers in a daily, weekly, or monthly basis, and it must be filled with priceless information: tips, news, promotions, specials, freebies, and bestsellers.  Visitors to your website have to signup to receive the newsletter, ensuring you have their contact information for future business ideas and opportunities.

8.    Join eBay
Through this website you can grab a very special market of bidders.

9.    Take a walk around town
Visit local shops in town that complement your jewelry pieces and offer them to the managers.  Take brochures and business cards, and be open to deals they could offer you.  If you can arrange a joint venture, you are sure to discover all the potential a jewelry business can offer, but remember that this requires you to work in favor of your partner as much as you work for your own business.  For joint ventures to be profitable and successful you have to give in order to receive, you must really care about the other’s business and wish for their full success

Starting a home business is always a great idea, especially if your budget is tight.  Depending on the kind of business you want to start, you have to think about the basics that will make the difference for your idea to be a success.

In a jewelry home business, it is vital that you present your pieces in an attractive and creative way so that they “speak” to the customer; appearance is everything, and thus, thinking about how to photograph them in an interesting way can take your business far ahead.

It is actually a good thing when budgets are tight.  It provides a great opportunity to be creative and unique, while learning to take the best advantage of your resources.

This is what Andrea did; she was a student with a dream.  She wanted to start her own jewelry business and didn’t let anything stop her.  Her budget was very limited, so she created a photo studio at home to make her jewelry look spectacular without hiring an expensive photographer.

She wanted her business to look professional, thus, the photos had to look professional.  In order to achieve this, she started researching and found lots of information online that explained what she should do and what to get to build a tabletop photo studio at home.

Andrea took the time to learn her camera settings and purchased a tripod, which she discovered is crucial for tabletop photography.  The rest required a very small investment, because she realized that the most important part was to create the right mood.

She got a 40-inch light tent and she invested in the appropriate lighting, buying some inexpensive table lamps, but expensive light bulbs of around 3000k.  With them, she achieved the soft light effect in the tent that brought out the best of her jewelry pieces.

She also found a black acrylic stand to display the jewelry on; this made the pieces stand out and gave them a classy look.  It also provided a nice reflection, making the photos look as if they were taken in a studio.  Finally, she got some velvet fabric to work as background for the photos.

Andrea says that her photo studio has helped her business succeed.  She says people often ask her who took the pictures, because they look like professional shots.

Of course, you can always ask your jewelry wholesalers for some quality material; however, if you want to imprint your own personality into your business, it is best to try doing things your way.

You can most certainly get new ideas from Andrea’s experience.  Just have clarity about what you want to achieve and you will surely find a creative way to get there.  Passion is the gateway to innovation; it is the secret to success.

We all understand the commercial value of the Internet these days, even more so if you are starting a home jewelry business, and you want to make it a successful venture.

Here we offer you 10 valuable tips to help you give your online jewelry business a unique twist over the competition:

1.    Show pride in what you do
Show and talk about your jewelry business with pride.  Do not see it as a side activity you are doing just to earn more money, but find your connection to it and discover why you were attracted to it in the first place.  If you are proud of what you sell, others will be proud of buying it.

2.    Build relationships
A jewelry business is a great opportunity to meet interesting people and connect with them; you never know who you may meet.  Focus on creating strong relationships with your clients by adding extra value to your pieces; the Internet is a superb way to do that.

3.    Respond emails promptly
If possible, reply to emails within the same day.  Whether the writer is a potential customer or just a visitor, answer with care because you never know when someone may become a client.

4.    Prepare to answer questions
You will receive all kinds of questions and requests, so be ready to talk about materials and related issues, the creation process, stone origin, your jewelry wholesaler, shipping and payment options, how you see the pieces you sell, and their true value.

5.    Be knowledgeable, but don’t lecture
Your clients will want to confirm how much you know about your business but they are probably not looking for a lesson.  Ask for opinions instead, because you can get a lot of ideas from them.

6.    Always tell the truth and honor your business
If you have a great product, you don’t need to trick people into buying it.  Tell them the truth about what best suits them and give them information so that they can make a good decision.

7.    Have patience
Do not take people’s comments personally.  If they think your prices are high, it is because they don’t know everything that goes into the creation and selling of a piece; this is why it is important that you make them look worth their money by adding some other kind of value, perhaps, nice packaging, a set of cleaning instructions or history booklet, or an authenticity certificate.

8.    Gift your customers
Include a thank you gift with every purchase; it can be something small and nice like a cell phone charm, or a discount coupon for the next purchase.

9.    A promise is a commitment
Your jewelry is your responsibility until it reaches the buyer’s hands.  Make sure you have a safe shipping method and be accurate about delivery times and rates; the same goes for your return policy.

10.    Stay calm
There are many things that you can’t control, thus, recognize this and do the best you can.  Your clients have to feel you are in control even though you aren’t, because if you remain calm they know everything will be fine and they will be rewarded in one way or another. If you lose your composure, they will label you as unprofessional.

Buy wholesale jewelry and follow these tips to create a profitable online jewelry business. You will never go wrong if you keep things simple and stay true to your beliefs. This way, you will also honor your clients with the best service they can imagine.

Most probably, you purchase your wholesale jewelry from the wholesaler online.  If this is so, you also probably copy and save the jewelry supplier’s photo of each piece you buy, but if you don’t, start doing it today, because this is the basis to create the best and easiest jewelry business inventory spreadsheet.  Curious?  You should be!  And here is how it works:

1.    First, get an image from the wholesale jewelry supplier
In most cases, the supplier will be able to provide a picture of each jewelry piece, but if this is not the case, just take a photo of each one as soon as you receive them.  Resize the image using a program like Paint, for PC’s, or a Preview program, for Mac’s, or, make instant thumbnail images.

2.    Second, name the image
By selecting a significant name for each jewelry piece, you take care of the indexing and inventory at the same time.  Let’s say you purchase three silver necklaces, this is the information you will write down in the file name:

-    The date, ‘1209’ means December 2009
-    The price, ‘3050’ means $30.50
-    The number of necklaces, in this case, 3.  You can add other important information, like the cost per piece, shipping cost, etc.

Once you’re done, the file name will look like this: 12093050310 (Dec. 09, $30,50, count 3, $10 each), to make it clearer, you can separate the numbers: 1209_3050_3_10.  You can also add a small description of the pieces:  1209_3050_3_10silver_neck.

3.    Third, add the pieces to a spreadsheet

This list of images can be viewed either as file names or as pictures, but if you want to be able to view a total column easily, use the file names.  Copy the file names of the pictures, without the extension (.jpg, for example). And just in case you don’t know exactly how to copy and paste an image, follow these quick instructions:

-    With the mouse, highlight the image file name
-    Right-click and select ‘copy’
-    Go to the spreadsheet
-    Right-click again and select paste to place the file name in a row on the spreadsheet

See?  In a quick and easy way, you will have all your wholesale jewelry pieces stored in your jewelry business inventory.  If you want to make it more sophisticated, just create a column for the actual thumbnail picture and include it in your inventory.

An inventory is a great tool if you want to stay on top of things and sort pieces easily.  If you’re looking for silver necklaces you have bought at different times, just sort the ‘type’ column and you will get all the data in an instant; however, remember to highlight the whole document before sorting it, or else, you will get all your inventory mixed up.  Just in case, save another copy as backup and never mess with it.

As you sell your pieces, simply enter a minus number and include a new total.  Your results will be a total cost of inventory on a daily basis.

You can find free spreadsheet programs online; no need to pay a fortune to get your wholesale jewelry professionally organized.

Any gift impresses not only by what it is in itself but by the wrapping it comes in.  The wrapping says how much a person cares and loves someone as much as the item inside it does.

This is especially true when wrapping jewelry, because it is a very personal and valuable gift, so it must show its worth and importance even before it is opened.

You, as a jewelry distributor, have to pamper your clients.  You should be always researching new ways to present and gift-wrap your jewelry pieces to add value and interest for your clients.  A beautiful wrapping can be as exciting as the piece itself, making the client feel they have made the best decision ever by purchasing a jewelry piece from you.

A wonderful new idea you should try is the gift bag.  The idea is to present your clients with a unique and generous gift bag to thank them for every purchase.  This is something you can do yourself; it is fast and impeccable, but the best part is indeed the result, a jaw-dropping gift bag that will certainly be cherished, commented, and even displayed at home.

These paper gift bags take about five minutes to create, give a lifetime of enjoyment, and can truly boost your jewelry sales.  We will explain here how you can start creating these wonderful bags right away.  Most probably, you have some wallpaper samples or leftover pieces of it around your home.  If you don’t, just take a quick ride to the nearest DIY store and grab some pieces with wonderful designs.  As you very well know, nothing is disposable these days; thus, this is a great way to use those small wallpaper pieces that you probably thought you’d never use ever again.

The idea is to wrap a box with the wallpaper.  Cereal boxes and rice boxes are awesome, but truly, any box in your kitchen will work great if you have a clear idea of what you need.  So, go on and wrap that box like you would a gift, gluing the paper together as you go on three sides (prefer UHU glue).  Leave one side of the bag unglued so that it is easy to take the cereal box out and just leave the paper gift bag.  Once the glue has dried, fold the top or open edge of the bag inside, to make a nice top edge.  Next, use a hole punch to make some holes and insert some ribbon or twine to work as gorgeous handles for your bag.  Garden twine works great to achieve a rustic look, while satin provides a very elegant option.

You can be sure your clients will be very excited to get such a creative and special gift bag; it really shows caring customer service and an eye for detail, but most importantly, they will be amazed to know you created them yourself.  Many will ask how you make them, so you can post the instructions to your jewelry blog, for example, where they will have to access them to view them, encouraging people to read your posts.

Added value will certainly get you returning customers, and it gets even better, since you spent almost nothing to create something unique, handmade, and recycled. Ask your jewelry wholesaler for more ideas; after all, they’re in the jewelry business too, and will also benefit from your repeat business.
